Active Tagging is also to supply the associated computer hardware and software, which will be used to protect high value apparatus.

The tags, which are approximately 25mm in diameter and only 7mm thick, weigh a mere 10g and will be attached to the devices with a specially developed double-sided tamperproof tape.

It is expected they will used on items such from robotic equipment through to laboratory research equipment and laptop computers.

Chris Bullock, managing director of Active Tagging, said: “The Xtag system will not only help to combat theft from the military, but will help ensure that equipment is kept in the correct location.

“Xtag uses active RFID technology with each unit containing a radio transmitter that sends a signal every second to show it is functioning properly.

“These messages are monitored by a dedicated PC housed at the ward reception, so they are continuously supervised.

“Sensors positioned at key exits and locations within a predefined safe area also relay a signal to the computer, and should a potential issue arise then an SMS text or email is immediately triggered to a member of the security staff.”

Chris added: “The Singapore military is now looking at expanding Xtag to its other bases, and we are now looking at selling the product into other military operations across the world.”

Singapore’s Ministry of Defence oversees the country’s army, navy and air force and is collectively known as the Singapore Armed Forces.

The republic is a former British colony, with a population of nearly five million people.

Active Tagging has won a major contract in the Kuwait, Bahrain and Dubai to install its Xtag baby security system into 200 public hospitals.

The first phase of the multi-million pound contract is for 20 maternity departments, and completion of the project will ensure that new-born babies are kept in a safe and secure environment.

The Xtag system is already in place in many hospitals across the UK, and moving into new territories forms an essential part of the company’s strategy for growth.

Managing director Chris Bullock said: “We established a satellite office in Dubai to help win business across the region, and it is headed up by former GlaxoSmithKline senior executive, Dr Shahid Raza, who has spent many years working both there and in Africa.

“The quality of healthcare across the whole of the Middle East is very high up in the priorities of the individual kingdoms; so much so, that it has taken around 12 months for the contract to come to fruition.

“Xtag is extremely small and light being 25mm in diameter and only 7mm thick, while weighing a mere 10mg. It uses active RFID technology and is fitted to a baby’s ankle by a soft material strap.”

He added: “It contains a radio transmitter that sends a signal every second to show it is functioning properly. These messages are monitored by a dedicated PC, so that the tags are supervised continuously.

“Sensors positioned at key exits and locations within a predefined safe area, also relay a signal to the computer. Should a potential security issue

arise then an SMS text or email is immediately triggered to a member of the maternity ward staff.”

While Xtag is currently winning praise within maternity wards it is also gaining ground as a cost-effective solution for protecting vulnerableadults.

This could be a way of ensuring an Alzheimer’s patient does not wander off unnoticed, or a patient in a rehabilitation clinic does not put themselves in danger as a result of being disorientated.

Chris added: “Active Tagging’s unique and innovative technology provides intelligent location and tracking in any environment from medical to military, commercial through to scientific.”
